Doula (pronounced doola) is a Greek word meaning woman servant or caregiver. These days it means an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) after childbirth. She mothers the mother - enabling her to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during the first weeks or months. The doula will facilitate during the period of adjustment to a new baby, by helping around the house and offering encouragement and suggestions.
New mothers now do not always have an extended family to hand. A doula performs a nurturing role, guiding by experience and helping with practicalities.
